Epilepsie komt veel voor bij mensen met een verstandelijke beperking en heeft vaak een grote invloed op hun kwaliteit van leven. Omdat zelfbepaling sterk samenhangt met kwaliteit van leven, onderzochten we hoe mensen met een licht verstandelijke beperking en therapieresistente epilepsie dit ervaren. We gebruikten de zelfdeterminatietheorie (ZDT) als kader en voerden een kwalitatief onderzoek uit bij zes deelnemers. Uit de resultaten kwamen drie hoofdthema’s naar voren: identiteit, sociale verbondenheid en eigen regie. Op basis van deze inzichten doen we aanbevelingen voor ondersteuning door naasten en professionals.
